Dear Kristina:
Your Dad and I had a long talk tonight about our upcoming 50 year high school reunion. As we always do, our conversation wandered all over the place, but we always find time to talk about you and Erik, Matthew and Brooke. Your Dad mention your blog and your article about Randy Starkman, I have just read it and I must say I had a lump in my throat at times. What a wonderful tribute, I am sure Randy "got the message".

I hope all is well with you,

Best personal regards,

Jim

I suffered a concussion in September of 2011. I've had a very, very long recovery, and about 12 days ago had a significant set back. I am a business analyst by trade, and own my own consulting firm. I have had moments of clear thinking and days where I feel almost normal since September, but I have never fully recovered.

I can't imagine participating in a sport - especially at a professional level - while recovering from a concussion. I can't imagine that people would hide symptoms, knowing that the foggy thinking, forgetfulness, or any of the many symptoms that are characteristic of concussions, can make it more likely that you'll reinjure yourself.

I think that what people need to start understanding is that in many cases, the time for recovery from concussion can almost be expressed in years, not months. I have been recovering for almost 8 months, and in the last two weeks feel as though I am just in the first month of recovery. And my job requires no physical activity whatsoever! If professional sports doesn't start understanding this, we're going to be losing out on seeing some fabulous talent develop.
